In her own words. Penelope Primeau describes National Championship experience.
I had no expectations because it was only my second high-level track race.
I didn't know who my competition was going to be or how my form was. The weekend started off with the individual pursuit which is 8 laps (2k) where you have to do the best time. I ended up placing 3rd in the B final with the second best time of the day. Then there was the keirin, which is where you have a motorcycle slowly bringing you to high speed and then leaving the track with three laps to go. I won my first Canadian title in that race. Then the first peloton race started with the scratch race which is 30 laps of the track. I was able to read the race pretty well and won that too.
The next day, I did the best time of the day for junior women in the flying 200m and qualified for the match sprint semi finals with that time. I faced my teammate in that final, and it was a series of very heated sprints for me to finish 2nd on the podium. It was now time for the Points Race, which is 60 laps where you get sprint points every 10 laps, I finished 3rd in that race.
The final day it was time for team sprints where we relay for a total of 3 laps, which we won.
It was so great to race and gain experience in new events. I am very grateful for the teachers at Miller that helped me with my work while I was gone.
